Astrid's 35th birthday weekend

Hong Kong 15 - 17 June 2012

In keeping with the tradition of 35th birthdays we spent Astrid's birthday weekend in Hong Kong and filled it up with surprises. The Mystery Birthday Weekend was comprised of:
  • A surprise cake at work!
  • A mystery dinner on Friday night which revealed itself to be The Striphouse by Harlan Goldstein - undoubtedly the best steak in Hong Kong!
  • Dim Sum breakfast - requested by the birthday girl and not originally part of the surprises
  • A mystery appointment on Saturday afternoon which turned out to be High Tea in the lobby of the Peninsula Hotel. Funnily enough on Friday during the surprise cake eating at work one person mentioned Afternoon Tea's and Astrid had to admit that we had never been to one in Hong Kong - no longer is that true :)
  • A mystery event which was Astrid's highlight as she had been talking about going to a Chinese Opera for weeks after spotting a poster for the 2012 Chinese Opera Festival. Ironically, Astrid managed to purchase herself tickets on the Friday before the birthday weekend as she thought that unless she books tickets herself she wouldn't be able to see a performance. The one on Astrid's birthday we got to see was called 'The Palace of Eternal Life' written 17th century by Hong Sheng during the Qing (Manchurian) Dynasty. It is an epic that tells a love story against the background of war during a time of change.
  • A mystery brunch at Top Deck on Jumbo in Aberdeen. We have come to love the Champagne brunch scene in Hong Kong and are ever so keen to try different locations
  • and the final stop on the Mystery Weekend was a trip to Tai Koo's shopping mall and cinema where we had to use up our film vouchers before they expired, so we watched a 'mystery film' which ended up being Prometheus
Astrid also received very nice jewellery as a gift
